Covington Day! But first let's talk about the farm, I know that's what you guys are here for. The other day, when we were on the lookout for squash bugs and found an abundance in Jeff Cook field, Erica and I collected the leaves where they lay their eggs and kept them in a sack. So today we (Daniel) took the leaves with the eggs and burned them this morning. Take that bugs.
After what felt like squash bug genocide, we went to Main House field and weeded, and weeded, and then, yeppers more weeding. We weeded the corn, okra, beans, watermelons, sunflowers, tobacco, and zinnias. Farmgirl...was tired. Not to disrupt the mass weeding, we went to the strawberries and were just getting started when we had to stop to put out some squash and melon transplants for this afternoon. While we were weeding, Cory did a farm tour, which we will have to learn at some point, and took a group of chatty ladies around the farm. After lunch, intern Jason and Erica transplanted African squash in Lower Field 3 and melons in Gus' Field.
Erica and I went on an adventure to Covington to get Cherry Bomb washed and other errands. Side note: these are also places I went with my family over the weekend, and when anyone comes to visit; what? there aren't that many place in Covington, okay? We stopped by Square Perk for dinner, a cute little coffee shop that I've mentioned before as a CSA drop off point. Farms on Floyd is a really cool shop where you can buy plants, spreads, jellies, pastries and also sells local farm's produce including ours. The couple running it are always so outgoing and I never leave empty handed. If any of you ever come to visit, it's no secret where we'd go. Also I have an extra room, there's a bed in there, well the cat sleeps there and there's no door, and the washer/dryer are there, actually you'd probably be better off in a hotel. But visitors welcome! I'll put you to work, isn't that right Mr. Sprocket?
Work? Pass the catnip. |
